❓[04-30] How do I turn my resume about section into a clear positioning statement?

Listen Later

David McErlain: I’m making different resumes for scripted, unscripted, and marketing and wondering if I need an about me or just a list based on the gatekeeper and story.

  • Differentiate CV from a resume. A CV is a “kitchen sink” of everything you’ve done, while a resume is focused and intentional.
  • Lead with the most relevant credit, then go backwards with less relevant rather than having those in chronological order.
  • Use an about section only if there are gaps or confusion in your story, otherwise let the credits speak.
  • Turn the about section into a positioning statement that frames your unique value and your problem solving skills, not a summary of your credits and experience that are already there.
  • Add bullet points to top companies that show what you brought and what did not happen because of you.
