Hopefully Somebody Knows

04 - Allison Norris - Masculinity, anger, therapy and values

Listen Later

My first expert and my first female guest! Allison Norris is a therapist in Seattle, WA (check her site out here: http://www.allisonnorristherapy.com/). She's been a great friend to my wife and I since they met in a new parents group 10 years ago. Allison is very wise and just a joy to speak with on any topic but particularly in her area of expertise, therapy for adults and kids.
We touch on a ton of foundational concepts like the concept of masculinity, white male privilege, acceptable vs. "problem" anger, trigger words, giving kids "labels" ("shy", "smart", "a good athlete", whatever), guilt vs. shame, what to do when a buddy opens up to you, therapy in general and "values" and what that means to you.
Allison mentioned a few resources in this discussion. Here are links to those:
- The book The New Rules of Marriage by Terrance Real - https://www.amazon.com/New-Rules-Marriage-What-Need/dp/0345480864/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1548218601&sr=8-1&keywords=New+Rules+of+Marriage
- Another great book, The Happiness Trap by Russ Harris - https://www.amazon.com/Happiness-Trap-Struggling-Start-Living/dp/1590305841/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1548218653&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=The+Happiness+Trap&psc=1
- Related to the above book, check out the idea of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy here: https://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acceptance_and_commitment_therapy
- At the end we discussed "values" which Allison noted is a vague concept and we talked about thinking about your own values. Here's an interesting mental exercise, a "values mall": www.anxietyhappens.com/AcceptanceCommitment/values_mall.htm
Finally, I'm going to put it here again because she's great so here's Allison's website: http://www.allisonnorristherapy.com/. If you're in the Seattle area I highly recommend her if you don't already have a therapist.
I feel like we just scratched the surface on the topics on this show. so…we'll have Allison back. I made her make a recorded commitment so that's like a contract. :)
As always if you'd like to support us please visit our sponsors or the sites and businesses mentioned during our shows. Or the easiest way to support us is to visit our Amazon affiliate link (https://www.amazon.com/?&_encoding=UTF8&tag=famousfin-20&linkCode=ur2&linkId=5681ed1d0adde1ee2614ece4c3a0025b&camp=1789&creative=9325) where you can shop as you always do with no product cost increase but Amazon will kick a little bit back to us which helps cover our production and marketing costs.
