Main Topic: Eli Polite
Woodworker for as long as he can remember
Skill saw since eight
Treehouse
Wood shop class in high schoolBest grades, as a result his name and face is still hanging on the wall in his school
House burnt down
Went to a vocational school and went to a carpentry school
Built two houses and donated them
Worked as a carpenter, framer, cabinet maker
Got into countertops
Now as a profession, works on making granite counter tops
His wife bought him a harbor freight lathe
Sat on it for a year without doing much with it
Finally started getting into segmenting about four years ago
Got into AAW and other organizations related to woodturning
What he likes about segmenting is that it takes woodturning to the next level
Wanted to draw with his woodworking, but without paint, instead he is using wood and segmenting
People would tell him he cant do something because of [insert reason here], but he would go out to prove them wrong.
Keeps an eye on the woodworking and woodturning world
Doesn’t want to expose himself to too many things
Got a Garfield poster that influenced him a lot from childhood.
Can work with stone, metal, wood, glass
It is limiting when people tell you that there is only one way of doing things.
If you tell me I can’t do something, he’ll do what he needs to to safely accomplish what they’re telling him is impossible to do
Looking for the most basic way to do any task
Goal is to simplify so anyone can do a complicated task with proper simple instruction
Break down the steps into the bare minimum jobs to complete each task
Every component becomes its own project
What happens to the pieces that Eli makesSome have sold as art
Some he has kept
Some have been sent off as part of a collaboration….
Do you have jigs to create the compound angles to make the segmentsMakes throwaway jigs that are used for one piece and thrown into the trash when done
Some others are fixed jigs to get one specific angle
Keeps notes on jigs for repeatability
Preferred material is corian or 1” MDF
Is there a piece that you’ve sold that you regret selling?Nope, because he knows where
Ideas come from the most ridiculous placesWalking through a dollar store and seeing a pattern on a hand towel
Dodecahedron spheres inspired by lights he saw hanging in a house
Will have a class teaching jigs, planning, segmented finials, and pinwheel inlay at Marc Adams School of Woodworking in Indian at the end of August!!!
He sees himself following where the designs will take him.
New designs are coming, but with more advanced concepts and processes
