How I Make Music

#040 First Bicycle

Listen Later

The soundtrack in this week's episode is called First Bicycle. It’s a quirky and somewhat ridiculous take on the popular solo piano genre which uses a customized vocal sampler I built called the ‘Doo Piano’ to create really fake-sounding sampled ‘doo doo doo’ vocals. It’s a very offbeat production which is rather difficult to categorize or describe ! In fact, the aim of this track is to provoke the practice of genre classification by being too weird to fit in anywhere. The track is most suitable for children’s mobile games, cuteness and comedy moments.

IN THIS EPISODE

* The piece originally started as a solo piano piece but felt like it was too ordinary.
* No attempt was made to make the vocals sound authentic. Two separate banks sampled vocals were required, one for each hand of the piano.
* I created a customized sampler which allowed me to ‘play’ my vocals like a keyboard. I then I inputted the MIDI data from the piano composition to create the ‘doo piano’.
* Attack and decay values were tweaked throughout to create variety in the start and end times of every ‘doo’.
* The more bold the idea, the more simplicity is required. Only 3 channels were used in this production.
* Got the idea of using more ‘doo’ sounds after the popularity of 90s Sitcom Joy. Some influence from scat singing
* The great underused trick of tempo fluctuation! A ritardando ends the piece. Debussy, Chopin set the bar for impressionist piano composition.

ABOUT THIS SHOW

You’re listening to How I Make Music, a weekly podcast for the musically curious to go behind the scenes of composition in a digital age. Hey, I'm John Bartmann. I’m a composer from South Africa. My soundtracks, moods and themes have been used in commercial film, TV and radio, and also in plenty of non-commercial videos, podcasts and audio dramas. Every Wednesday, we break apart one of my own compositions and investigate the stories and insights into how it was made, and its effect on listening ears. How I Make Music helps you better understand how to make, select and use production music that grips your audience.
