We’ve all watched movies and read books that have the ever familiar formula: the main character struggles through a problem, it all works out with the help of a mentor and then everything works out in the end. But have you ever thought of the name for this formula? Not me! It’s called the Hero’s Journey by Joseph Campbell. Fred showed me this video by Bob Greenberg where he interviews Ramsey Mussallam where he talks about sparking curiosity in our students and it BLEW MY MIND! He said teachers should always let students struggle with a problem to get them curious and engaged and that it’s all about WHERE to put the lecture part of your lesson.
Right away, I thought about how I can use this with my book report project. Here’s the book report form that I created and it’s yours for FREE! I created this as an assignment on Google Classroom for my students so they can complete it online. Check out our Hero’s Journey Pinterest board! This includes the graphic organizers and pictures I used with my class.
