How I Make Music

#041 Tough Good Guy

Listen Later

The soundtrack in this week's episode is called Tough Good Guy. It’s a woozy, tempo-free slide guitar piece with roots in the Western/Cowboy film genre. It has a slow, bluesy feel that might accompany portrayals of machismo, cowboys, or a hypnotic desert heat trance. There’s also an element of psychedelia to it, making it useful for subject matter dealing with psychoactive drugs.

You’re listening to How I Make Music, a weekly podcast for the musically curious to go behind the scenes of composition in a digital age. Every Wednesday, we break apart one of my own compositions and investigate the stories and insights into how it was made and its effect on listening ears. My name is John Bartmann. I’m a music composer from South Africa and this is How I Make Music.

IN THIS EPISODE

* Repetition is hypnotic. This piece contains a single two-phrase guitar line simply played over and over with a subtle build in pad-like accompaniment
* Slide guitar is the sound of the blues. It’s also a trippy sound, used to suggest ‘breaking free’ of the guitar fretboard in the same way that drugs create the impression of breaking free of the mind.
* String ensemble being run through a sweeping filter and a panning device for variation and trippiness
* Low choir notes, very masculine
* For a full Western/Cowboy approach to music, use guitar, harmonica, banjo and the occasional vibraslap (which sounds a lot like a rattlesnake!)
* Record your ideas constantly! Even if it’s just into a phone. Productivity skyrockets when you don’t have to face a blank page. This piece started as a simple guitar noodle. One short idea recorded spontaneously can later spark off a whole production.
* Pink Floyd use psychedelic guitar slide with delay in ‘Echoes’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-E7_VHLvkE
