It was a prison sentence he levied against himself. After the divorce, he "punished" himself greatly - doing what he could to fill the void with external noise, distractions, and experiences.

His health took a nosedive, his weight shot up, his relationships tanked, and he fell into a depression, taking things from bad to worse. As he explains on the show, "I was driven by the pain of what I didn't want."
