How I Make Music

#045 Precious Cargo

Listen Later

The soundtrack in this week's episode is called Precious Cargo. It’s a no-tempo, calming and introspective piece of backing music made with just acoustic guitar, piano and a singing bowl. It was originally written as part of a sound palette for a true crime podcast focusing on some touching but serious themes. The track is suitable for calming, tender and gentle moments, and useful for depictions of babies, pets and poignant family or nature moments.

IN THIS EPISODE

* Singing bowls are a great one-trick-pony to convey calmness, solitude and peace. But they’re also very resonant and can be sharp on the ears. View the frequency profile and dip the dominant frequencies to restore order to their timbre.
* Simpler melodies are more calming than complex ones. To create calm, simplify the music.
* Acoustic guitar has many faces, and one of the most obvious is beachy relaxation (although the ukulele has taken over much of that territory now). Either way, use gentle acoustic guitars for moments of peace.
* The lydian mode is a magical, haunting musical scale. This piece uses it to create a sense of suspended animation, an unresolved floating above the surface.
