052: Onboarding New Employees - Benefits of All the Procedures you Have to Date
Onboarding new employees is an integral part of running a law firm. You need team members to take some work off your plate and you need a consistent way to bring them onto the team. If you don’t institute a solid onboarding process, you will be more stressed and overwhelmed than you were before you hired help.
So, in this episode, Melanie is going to share some of her top tips for onboarding. She has perfected the art of documenting her onboarding procedures and now has a large, well-oiled team. They’ve grown fast and even gone remote.
The three aspects of onboarding that we will discuss today are culture and connecting with other employees, logistics, and job responsibilities. - Make a list of all of the software that a new team member will need access to when they start so that when you have someone new you can simply work your way down the list to make sure that you’re not missing anything.
- Make a list of all of the hardware that a new team member will need. Bonus points if you include a link to purchase the item so that you don’t have to search for it every time you need to buy something.
- Find all of the written and video resources that you currently have for training and put them in one centralized place (i.e. a Dropbox folder, an Evernote, a folder, etc). This doesn’t have to be fancy but it does have to be accessible to the whole team.
- BONUS: If you are disappointed that you don’t have more or are feeling like you should have more, start a list of procedures that you’d like to create and save them so that you and your team can start slowly knocking them out one by one.
