054: Getting Curious About Your Relationship with Alcohol to Reach Your Full Potential with Molly Ruggere

Listen Later

In recent years, thanks to change makers like Molly Ruggere, there’s been a huge shift in how we talk about alcohol consumption. There is so much more nuance to sobriety than someone being an alcoholic or not, and in this episode we’re discussing getting “sober curious” about your relationship with alcohol and what to do if you feel like you’re leaning on it more than you’d like in order to relax or feel more comfortable in social settings. If you’re looking to feel more empowered about your decisions around alcohol, this episode is for you!

Molly Ruggere is a Certified Life Coach, Alcohol Freedom Coach and Founder of Counterculture Club, a global alcohol-free community based in Charlotte, NC that offers private and group coaching, monthly membership and virtual and in-person events for individuals who want to build authentic relationships, socialize without drinking and counter the mainstream idea that we need alcohol to have fun, fulfilling lives. As someone who once thought alcohol was a requirement for socializing and fun, Molly’s mission is to show others that removing alcohol from your life is the opposite of boring—it opens up doors and possibilities, allowing you to embrace opportunities with clarity.

  • Some key takeaways on getting sober curious:

    • If you look at alcohol as your way to unwind, or your reward for getting through the day, get curious about where those beliefs come from. It might be from observing another person (like a parent) treat alcohol as a reward. Unpacking this can help you unlearn that so you can work towards a healthier “reward” at the end of a long day.
    • You don’t have to be an “alcoholic” to explore sobriety or live a sober lifestyle. More and more people are reducing or eliminating their alcohol consumption so they can feel better and engage in social interactions without using alcohol to feel more comfortable. Whatever your reason is for cutting back is completely valid!
    • If you’re looking for some ideas to replace alcohol in your daily and weekly routines, try any form of exercise or movement for those natural feel-good chemicals and health benefits, journaling to relax and practice mindfulness, or just exploring fun and delicious non-alcoholic beverages.
    • Welcome to the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins (that’s me!). My goal in this podcast is to share valuable and actionable tips on what I call the “Core Four” - mindfulness, movement, habits, and growth - so you can build a life that feels true to you. I will be interviewing people who have had a “wake up call” that their good-on-paper life wasn’t lighting them up, and what they did to change that. Join us every week for a new episode of the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins!
