On today’s episode of Capturing COVID Jason Newland MD, MEd sits down with Ray Kreienkamp MD, PhD to discuss COVID-19 and its impact on children with diabetes, getting back to sports for water polo athletes, and the COVID-19 Pandemic Task Force. Dr. Kreienkamp joined the pod to share his experience as a medical resident in pediatrics during the pandemic. Ray was not only influential in the world of water polo during the pandemic, but also for children and adolescents diagnosed with diabetes attempting to get back to sports. According to the CDC, diabetes is a risk factor, but Ray pointed out that there are some individuals diagnosed with diabetes that are not part of that higher risk population. The way a guideline is written can have unintended consequences and could exclude diabetic individuals who should not be excluded, creating other adverse effects, particularly in the pediatric population.
