At the eastern most edge of Long Island lies Montauk Point, a scenic landmark with beautiful views along the New York Coast. Just to the west of this, however, lies the abandoned Montauk Air Force Base, on the grounds of old Fort Hero. It is said, after the government ceased operations there, a group of independently-funded researchers began conducting experiments ranging from psychological warfare, to time travel; using unsuspecting members of the military and even children. This project came to a disastrous end in 1983, when the scientists ripped a hole in space-time to 1943, and their test subject conjured an enormous monster so violent and destructive, the entire base fled for their lives.
