“Define your work in a way that serves you”

As entrepreneurs and small business owners we can always be pushing And never satisfied

We think if we just work a little harder and a little longer – all the problems will go away.

  • You will never master this thing called business
  • That’s Good news and Bad news

    • It’s good to have something that will cause you to work hard and Develop
    • But Bad, if you don’t balance it
    •

This Podcast is Perspective On a BALANCED View

We put a lot on ourselves.

We read books and go to seminars and listen to podcasts – And we become idea junkies

WE Want to do it all

      • I have to read that book
      • I have to implement that
      • Always pushing and never satisfied

AND …We Don’t Celebrate our wins!  BC there is always more to do.

WE DON’T LEAVE ANY MARGIN TO THINK – TO THINK!

Let me tell you something Friend…

        THAT doesn’t serve you.

You will not be your Biggest FAN – YOU WILL BE YOUR BIGGEST CRITIC

Everyone else is Celebrating You and saying – Wow, Well Done…but you’re not satisfied

        THAT DOES NOT SERVE YOU

Here’s the phrase I would ask you to memorize so that you can repeat to yourself

“Define your work in a way that serves you”

Work is not a dreaded 9 to 5 existence

It is an expression of your unique gifts, talents and life experience for the Purpose of Serving other people

Working ON Your Business:  Yes you should do that…

If you’re going to work ON your business – There is a lot of Thinking Work and NEW things you have to learn.

It’s a little like learning how to play the piano

        • It is awkward and clunky and you’re not very good at it.
        •

          You have a choice…

You can either celebrate yourself for making the Big Decision to leave your comfort zone – OR you can be impatient with yourself and Condemn yourself.

I got this quote from Jeff Walker – it was a simple idea but very profound

DEFINE YOUR WORK IN A WAY THAT SERVES YOU

“YOUR WORK” – does not have to be just your business building work – it can be anything you are working on to reach your full potential

You have made a choice to Live into the fullness of your potential – AND that means, doing something you are not good at now.

One of those things for me was Podcasting.

I saw it as a big part of the work I wanted to do at MMT

And I knew I was not good at it

I was going to give myself the time to be bad – permission to be Incompetent for a period of time.

But somewhere along the journey – I lost some of that Grace for myself

My podcast was condemning me.  OR I was condemning me bc of my podcast work

“Define it in a way that serves you”

Here are some other thoughts on this…

          1. Small beginnings. Lower the bar and create the habit first.
          2. “define it in a way that serves you” – – – Make your work A Fun and Joyful part of your life.

            • Give yourself Grace to Start Small
            • Give yourself permission to be an amateur
            •

              1. Celebrate your WINS – we all have a lot on our lists. We get them done and then go right to the next thing.  Celebrate and Ring the Cow Bell!  YOU HAVE TO BE YOUR BIGGEST CHEERLEADER.
                • Celebrate More
                • Celebrate YOU and be Generous and Encouraging when you have a good day or a good win.
                •

                  1. Be On Guard against condemning yourself. DALE CARNEGIE – do not CCC.  There is this TAPE running in the background – The critical voices…You’re Doing IT Wrong.  What ever IT is.  Listen…NO you are NOT!  You are Doing it.  And you are figuring it out.
                  2. Saw this title for a John Maxwell Book:

“Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn”

                    • I don’t have to read the book – I Just need that reminder
                    •

                      1. Work from a place of Contribution – not just accumulation and accomplishment. Get your joy from what you GIVE to life, not from what you GET from life.
                        • THAT WILL BE DIFFERENT FOR EVERY PERSON.
                        • How do YOU, give to life!
                        •

                          1. Do Your Unique work – Your Bradmillerness Work – do not compare your work to others. Comparison is the death spiral into ourselves.  You are the Intelligent Designer – do your Unique Work that no one else can do
                          2.

“Define YOUR WORK in a way that serves you” – CHOOSE TO BE YOUR BIGGEST FAN AND – then you can Celebrate Yourself and Your Big Life
