Whether life is great and full of successes, or life is hard and full of pain, there is a persistent temptation to view ourselves in light of our situation. For the successful, the temptation is to attach our value and significance to that success and have our egos inflated by it. For the run-down, the temptation is to attach our lack of value and significance to our failure and have our hearts despair over it. For the follower of Jesus, however, our identity is formed from a different source. It’s not about our performance or lack thereof; it’s about Jesus’ performance on our behalf. James is going to show us how we can shape our identity to be able to withstand the pressures that come with failure and success.
