Righteousness: The Proper Standard for Goodness

(Matthew 3:13-17)

“Allow it for now, because this is the way for us to fulfill _____________________.”

Matthew 3:13-17

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to stop him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?”

15 Jesus answered him, “Allow it for now, because this is the way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John allowed him to be baptized.

16 When Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water. The heavens suddenly opened for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased.”

Ancient Religion vs. Modern Religion

1) Religion was not optional.

2) Religion was not private.

3) Religion was not limited to the spiritual, it was also material.

"The biblical writers and the people of God did not associate 'salvation' with heaven, inner peace, or spiritual enlightenment per se. They saw the redemption vision of the gospel in the Old and New Testaments as a world restored to righteousness. Not souls and spirits rescued and reclaimed, but bodies and communities, trees and forests, sky and earth restored to health and vitality. All things made right from the utter wrongness of sin and wickedness."

To be righteous is to live and behave according to a standard of what is good and right toward the other.

Matthew 5:20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.

Self-Righteousness

• The root of self-righteousness is the belief that your own personal works justify you before God.

• Self-righteousness believes that you are good enough or can be if you try hard enough.

Matthew 5:21-22

21 “You have heard that it was said to our ancestors, Do not murder, and whoever murders will be subject to judgment. 22 But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Whoever insults his brother or sister will be subject to the court. Whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be subject to hellfire.

How do we move towards righteousness?

• It starts with hunger and thirst (Matthew 5:6).

• We must be people who know what fills us.

• This means seeking His kingdom, trusting Jesus the Messiah, walking with Him and following in His footsteps.
