Identity and character are big buzzwords of our time. They are also fairly broad, loose, and somewhat undefinable. We discover both identity and character when we are under pressure and challenged to respond without much thought.
We are all on a perpetual search for identity.
We hear it talked about a lot; both individuals and organisations are all searching for their 'brand' identity. How will people recognise your brand? What thoughts and feelings will be provoked when they see your logo or hear your name referenced?
In this respect identity is in the eye of the beholder. It’s not ours to define. Rather it is the process of all our experiences, all our efforts, and choices.
So it both is and it isn't ours to define.
We can change it by our behaviour, our responses, our decisions. We may buy certain products, identify ourselves with certain brands and fashions, and we cloak our lives with things that we hope will provide us with a better sense of who we are.
In this episode I explore the relationship between our character and our identity, thinking about the following:
Your character defines how you will respond in the present and future; Identity is defined by how you have responded in the past.
