Turning Readers Into Writers

079 - Get inspiration for your story with Steve Adams

Listen Later

Steve Adams, writer and coach, began his professional life in theatre, before turning to screenwriting and then to prose writing.

Adams writes creative non-fiction and personal essays and I ask him what makes a good personal story. For the memoirists amongst you, Steve offers great advice on how to determine if a moment or stage of your life warrants a story, and how to find it.

Steve is primarily a short story writer, but has made the transition into long form fiction (his debut novel is due out next year) and kindly shares the best resources out there to help you make the same transition.

One of those is Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott - an absolute game-changer in my opinion!

Not only is Steve Adams a writer, but he’s a book coach. He helps writers, both beginner and established, get their books into their best shape so they are ready for querying or publishing.

He loves to watch his students move through the many aha! moments that come with writing, whether that be a craft breakthrough or an epiphany about the characters or story.

To round off out time together, Steve tells me about his debut novel and the inspiration behind it. Set in New York City, it’s the story of an illicit love affair and it’s far reaching consequences.

I so enjoyed my conversation with Steve Adams and love his enthusiasm for story and the beauty of language.
