Believing and Loving

1 John 3:13-24

God, Love, & Scripture:

Love Across Testaments: Love is not limited to only the New Testament.

Created for Connection: We were created for relationship, rooted in the divine love of God.

A Story of Pursuit: The entire Bible is the story of God seeking a relationship with His creation.

Motivated by Love: God's seeking is motivated by love.

God is Love: Love is the motivating factor for salvation and our lives.

1 John 2:3-6

3 This is how we know that we know him: if we keep his commands. 4 The one who says, “I have come to know him,” and yet doesn’t keep his commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps his word, truly in him the love of God is made complete. This is how we know we are in him: 6 The one who says he remains in him should walk just as he walked.

1 John 2:3 This is how we know that we know him: if we keep his commands.

1 John 3:23 Now this is his command: that we believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another as he commanded us.

1 John 3:1 See what great love the Father has given us that we should be called God’s children—and we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it didn’t know him.

1 John 3:13-24

Our Model of Love

• God is Father. He loves us and calls us His Children (vs. 1).

• Jesus is THE example of sacrificial love (vs. 16).

• Love takes shape in real-world action and personal commitment to others (vss. 3:17-18).

• Love is central to remaining in the Triune God (vs. 24 & John 15:9-17).

Life is found, not in seeing how close I can get to 'the line' without breaking God's law. Rather, life is found in remaining in God's love.

We can walk the path Jesus walked because he has first walked it for us. Sometimes we can’t find it in us to forgive. Jesus shows us how still to love. We are people who are trying to learn what love really means. Thank God that, with Christ and the saints, we never walk alone.

–Sam Wells

Learning What Love Really Means:

1. Recognize Your Worth: You are loved, you are holy, you are mine.

2. Commit Fully: Love requires full devotion. Ask yourself, what am I serving?

3. Foster Family Bonds: Love requires treating each other as family.

4. Embrace Forgiveness: Love requires loving those who hurt us and our enemies.

Luke 6:27-31

27 “But I say to you who listen: Love your enemies, do what is good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If anyone hits you on the cheek, offer the other also. And if anyone takes away your coat, don’t hold back your shirt either. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and from someone who takes your things, don’t ask for them back. 31 Just as you want others to do for you, do the same for them.
