Title: Four Devotions
Text: Acts 2:42
FCF: We often struggle being what the church is called to be.
Prop: Because God has given 4 devotions to His church, we must continually devote ourselves to these things if we are His people.
Scripture Intro:
[Slide 1] Turn in your bible to Acts chapter 2.
It is a joy to be back with you this week. Both to worship together with you and also to preach. We always greatly enjoy our time away… but always greatly look forward to our first week back among you. I want to thank both Nick and Jerry for doing a wonderful job in my absence. I am thankful that we have men that are apt and qualified to teach.
By way of reminder to you, since it has been a couple weeks, Peter has just completed his first sermon in the book of Acts. It was the sermon he delivered at Pentecost. Of course, his primary topic was that Jesus was the Messiah of God and the King of Kings. Peter presents Jesus as both Savior and Lord of all.
In response to his message, we see many ask what they must do. Peter advises that they repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus for the forgiveness of their sins. With many more words, the Spirit moved upon about 3000 souls that day, and they received faith in Jesus Christ.
After this great harvest, the church in Jerusalem had officially begun. At various points in the book of Acts, Luke summarizes all that the Lord did to expand and grow His church and to fulfill the promise Jesus made to the disciples that they gospel would go to the uttermost part of the earth. And today’s text is the outline of the first of those summaries.
Today’s text also provides a unique opportunity for us in that I preached this passage on the first Sunday in January after becoming your pastor. 7 years ago I spoke on this very text. I actually went back and re-read my sermon from that day. What a blessing to go back and see not only how God’s Word never changes but also how much we’ve grown as a church. Perhaps you’ll see that as we go forward.
I am in Acts chapter 2. I am reading from the LSB today but you can follow along in the pew bible on page 1231 or in whatever version you prefer.
Transition:
If you were thinking that because we only have 1 verse today that it may be a short sermon… alas, you’d be mistaken. Remember I’ve had two weeks of rest
