Darkness doesn't allow us to see. So the noises and shadows play with our imagination (and emotions!) leading us to be afraid of that which does not exist.

Particularly history relating to the Christian church. In truth, there is no greater darkness than spiritual darkness. Why? Because this kind of darkness produces in every human heart a distorted view of God that has led millions to fear God more than the devil!
