Holy Lit: The Bible

080 | Tola and Jair (Judges 10:1-5)

Listen Later

Picture this: it's roughly 1200 to 1000 BCE, and we're stepping into what scholars call the Iron Age. But this isn't the Israel of King David or Solomon that you might be familiar with. There's no unified kingdom, no grand palace in Jerusalem, no centralized army. Instead, imagine a patchwork quilt of tribal territories scattered across the hill country, with small city-states and regional strongholds dotting the landscape. Israelites are living cheek by jowl with Canaanites, Philistines, and a dozen other peoples, each group fiercely protective of their own gods, customs, and ways of doing business.
