087: All the Ways to Get a Work Permit

Listen Later

In this week’s Immigration Law for Tech Startups podcast, let's dive into the world of work permits – what they are and how they relate to other types of statuses that could allow you to work when you're physically in the United States. I also discuss all the ways to get work permits and at what points in your immigration journey are you eligible for them.

Just a brief overview, a work permit is formally and technically known as Employment Authorization Documents (EAD). A work permit is not a couple of things. It’s not a green card. It’s not a permanent residence. It is also not a visa. A work permit is a physical card that you apply for via the I-765 form. It's specifically issued by the government and it serves as evidence of your identity as well as your ability to work legally in the United States.
