Walk Through Grief with Grace

087: Bring Levity and Empathy to Caring for Aging Parents with Howard Miller

Listen Later

“Laughter is the best medicine” may seem like just a common cliche, but humor and levity can be powerful tools when it comes to caring for aging family members. In this episode, Jenn is joined by Howard Miller, the author of Burdens and Blessings, to discuss the lessons he learned while caring for his parents who lived into their nineties. Howard shares so many lovely examples of humor found through grief and challenging times, discusses navigating sibling relationships while caregiving, and key tips for determining what we and our loved ones want for their care as they grow old or face health issues. One of the key messages of this episodes is bringing empathy to caregiving as we realize the vast loss our parents are experiencing - the loss of people, physical and mental capabilities, and more. By putting ourselves in their shoes and giving them as much agency as possible, we can help our parents and ourselves find more joy and comfort in their later years.
