Listen Later

  • Reiterate your original question but give more clarity on the specific technical skills that you need to stand out.
  • Frame your learning process as leveling up existing skills to be faster and more proficient, so your positioning feels confident.
  • Reach out to other experts who can help you translate your Avid knowledge to Premiere.
  • Continuously follow up and connect on your progress. The goal is to be the most recent person on their mind that they would want to work with, who’s proficient enough to do the job.
  • Go through Chapter 9, Page 115 of Adobe Premiere Pro Best Practices & Workflow Guide for turnovers in Premiere as advised by Itai Lavin.

Jacob Wells: I’ve been given an extra month of work while my boss leans on me for ideas he’s pitching, but I’m wary of being taken advantage of like others before me. How do I position myself so I’m adding value without being exploited or giving too little?

  • Protect your time and ideas by defining boundaries and requiring mutual exchange of value before giving away energy, creativity, or skills.
  • Identify when opportunity is really just unpaid exploitation
  • Use your leverage and set the terms instead of letting them dictate it for you.
  • Ensure that there is a mutual exchange of value, where the value doesn't have to be money.
