❓[09-23] Email etiquette on using "RE:" and forwarded email

Listen Later

Leonardo Oliviera: Could you clarify the use of “RE:” in an email?

  • It comes from early email conventions (like CC and BCC from carbon copy). RE: means reply and shows the message is part of an ongoing thread.
  • Keep RE: if the conversation is continuous, even when you change the subject line. It signals this is still part of the same thread.
  • Never start a cold email with RE: to trick someone into opening. That’s manipulative, spammy, and instantly destroys trust.

Leonardo Oliviera: What’s the follow-up strategy if I didn’t get a reply after someone forwards my email?

  • In a forwarded email, you get one shot. You don’t have the opportunity to send follow ups.
  • Clarify in a couple of weeks if your message was actually forwarded.
  • Provide gratitude and value when checking in to make follow-ups more natural.
