09: Be Ready for Life with Peter Beuth

Listen Later

Welcome to episode nine of the Explore Your Fitness podcast!  In this episode, we have Peter Beuth, co-owner of Manic Denver LLC, and head trainer at Manic Training Highlands Ranch.  He's a certified ACE Group Fitness Instructor and Master of all things "Manic".

Motivation:

"No one cares how much weight you can lift.  What they really want to know is can you ski all day or climb a fourteener." This is what Peter loves about outdoor sports, and this is what Manic Training is all about, getting you "Ready for Life".

Challenges:

Peter was bullied when he was younger.  Instead of focusing on that, he chose to focus on surfing and skiing with his friends.

Passion for helping you:

Manic's slogan is "Ready for Life". They want to make you fit in every way possible. So you are better prepared to handle whatever life throws at you.  It's not just about physical training either.  Manic training gives you the mindset you need to succeed.

Nutrition:

It's hard to achieve any real success with fitness without proper nutrition.  Peter recommends taking it in steps.  His first step was cutting out most sugar.  He then moved to a vegetarian diet and avoiding soy as much as possible. If you're ever in Steamboat Springs, CO, Peter says that you need to try June's Original Organic Steamboat Essentials (Joose).

Final Round!

Do you have a morning routine?

I jump out of bed at 4 am, have a bagel and coffee, and prepare for my first class.

What’s a favorite quote or mantra of yours and how does it help you with your fitness?

The airplane theory: "take care of yourself first because if you don't you may not be good to anyone else."

Who inspires you?

My father. He spent twenty years as a commercial fisherman off the coast of New England. Even after being gone for ten days at a time, he would still make time to take me on a four-hour drive north to New Hampshire to ski all day.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

From my father: If you're going to do it, do it right the first time, or don't do it at all.

Do you ever take a day off?  If so, what does that look like?

Enjoy football on a Sunday or head up to the high country to ski or hike.

What book would you recommend?

Thug Kitchen by Matt Holloway and Michelle Davis. The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell

If you could give your younger self advice, what would it be?

Be nicer to my sister.

What does fitness mean to you?

Maintain a solid quality of life. Remain highly mobile, steady on my feet, and self-sufficient longer than most people are able to these days. I want to be able to keep up with my kids when I have them.

What are you grateful for?

The opportunity to lead a truly blessed life. I have a supportive family, positive mindset, and now I have a great career.
