Turning Readers Into Writers

099 - Workshop your way to the top with Reyna Marder Gentin

Listen Later

Reyna Marder Gentin worked as a criminal defence lawyer for over 25 years and at the age of 50 decided it was time for a change.

After considering a number of different avenues, she was bitten by the writing bug and since 2014 has been learning and writing and publishing via workshops and the life of hard knocks!

Taking a memoir class, and really enjoying it, Reyna took her characters and turned them into a novel. After repeated rejections she knew she had more to learn.

Since then, Reyna Marden Gentin has taken multiple workshops and that’s where she devises and writes the first drafts of her novels.

With the workshops she gets weekly feedback on what’s working and what’s not. She can bounce ideas around with her fellow students to craft better characters and work out plot problems.

Reyna talks about how she made the transition from the legal world to the writing world and some of the different ways in which she’s adjusted. She’s learnt it’s important to be flexible because you never know what life is going to throw at you.

Gentin explains her writing process and how it’s changed over the years and with each project. She exemplifies how novel writing is a process, not a formula. Each book has its own journey to publication and she is happy to try new ways of working.

If you’re thinking about a career change, you’ll learn how freeing it can be, but that it also comes with challenges. We talk about money, research and time management.

We discuss how terrifying it can be to change your job and identity, but also how liberating it is.

As Reyna Marden Gentin says, “you can figure stuff out”.
