* Your true success in life is measured by the depth of your relationships.
* Paul was a relationship expert.
* He had to come down on the people for their immorality.
* Now it was time for him to deal with them for their idolatry.
* He talked about their history, how their ancestors were punished by God for their idolatry.
* Vs 14-15 - he couched his rebuke with a compliment.
* He’s like, “Stop doing this junk. Now, I know you’re smart and thoughtful people and want what’s best...”
* The rule of thumb in relationships is 5:1 -
* 5 positive interactions for every 1 negative (Dr. John Gottman).
* This keeps you at status quo.
* The rule of thumb for thriving relationships is 20:1 -
* 20 positive interactions for every 1 negative.
* When interacting, remember the difference between criticism and complaint.
* A complaint is about behavior.
* It focuses on “me.”
* “When you did that I felt this…”
* Criticism is about identity.
* If focuses on “you.”
* “You did this. You always do this. You’re such a ….”
* Unchecked criticism leads to contempt.
* Contempt brings in the element of comparison.
* “You did this. You always do this. I never do that…”
* Your success in life is measured by the depth of your relationships!
* So be good at relationships!
