Paul turns to one of the church’s most important questions: the spiritual gifts given by the Holy Spirit. Though there are many different gifts, they all come from the same Spirit and are given for one purpose—to help, strengthen, and build up one another.
Some are given wisdom. Others receive knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, leadership, or the ability to speak and interpret unknown languages. Yet no gift is greater than another, because every believer has a unique place in God’s plan.
To explain this, Paul compares the church to a human body. A body has many parts, and every part is necessary. The hand cannot say it does not need the foot, and the eye cannot say it does not need the hand. Even the parts that seem weakest or least important are often the most necessary. When one part suffers, every part suffers. When one part is honored, all rejoice together.
In the same way, every believer is part of the body of Christ. Each person has been placed exactly where God wants them, and every gift matters.
But after speaking about gifts, Paul reveals something even greater.
You may speak with the eloquence of angels, understand deep mysteries, possess great faith, or give away everything you own—but without love, it means nothing. Without love, even the greatest gifts become empty noise.
Paul then paints one of the most powerful pictures of love ever written. Love is patient and kind. It is not jealous, boastful, proud, or rude. It does not demand its own way. It keeps no record of wrongs. Love stands for truth, endures through hardship, and never gives up.
Spiritual gifts will one day pass away. Knowledge will fade. Prophecy will end. But love will last forever.
For now, we only see part of the picture, like a dim reflection in a mirror. One day, everything will become clear. Until then, three things remain—faith, hope, and love. And the greatest of these is love.
Verse of the Day:Psalms 126:2
We were filled with laughter, and we sang for joy. And the other nations said, “What amazing things the Lord has done for them.”
Question of the Day:
Can you laugh with God today?
