“For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful.”

– 1 Corinthians 14:14

“Unfruitful” has also been interpreted “barren”. The tongues speaker is blessed spiritually without any understanding of the words they spoke meant.

Speaking in a Spirit-inspired language is not a product of the mind. The source is the Holy Spirit. It is spiritual language.1 Corinthians 12:7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. Speaking in tongues is a “manifestation of the Spirit”. The gift list in 1 Cor. 12 is referring to the “gift of tongues”. Speaking in unknown languages is not restricted to the gift of unknown languages. There is speaking in tongues that is not the gift of tongues. There is tongues speaking that is an evidence of Holy Spirit baptism.
