Paul reminds the Corinthians that when he came to them, he did not rely on polished speech, philosophy, or human persuasion, but simply preached Jesus Christ and Him crucified. He came in weakness and dependence on the Holy Spirit so that their faith would rest in the power of God, not in the wisdom of man. The heart of the passage is that God’s wisdom looks foolish to the world, yet it is the very wisdom that brings salvation, because Jesus took our place and paid the penalty for our sin.
