1 Corinthians 8

Listen Later

In 1 Corinthians 8, Paul addresses whether or not its okay to eat foods sacrificed to false idols. The answer is yes and no. It depends. It is a big deal to do things like eating foods sacrificed to idols or drinking a glass of wine if the person you are eating with has convictions or struggles with such things. Food is a neutral element as is alcohol in and of itself. If someone struggles with these foods or things like alcohol addiction and you partake in these things in front of that person, you could cause your fellow brother or sister to stumble and ignore the convictions of the Lord within them. Then it is not okay to partake in these things. We are to encourage each other in faith, not cause each other to stumble or condemn each other. Neutral things can be used for good or for evil depending on how they are used and who is using them. What is okay for one person, may not be okay for another. It depends on what the Lord is working on in and through the person that makes the difference. We must pay attention to all we do and say and make sure it lines up with Scripture and encourages those around us, growing each other's faith in Jesus as we do. When we sin against each other, we sin against Jesus. We have a due, an obligation, a privilege, and an honor to guard each other and edify each other in the Lord. We need to take that duty seriously every day.
