The Safe Space

1 Corinthians 9

Welcome to The Safe Space!

Paul responds to the church’s questions with wisdom, balance, and a call to live not for self, but in love—honoring God and strengthening one another.

He then confronts those who question his authority as an apostle because he preaches without charge. Paul reminds them that he has seen the Lord, that his work is the very reason they belong to Christ, and that they themselves are proof of his calling. Like a soldier, a farmer, or a shepherd, he has every right to receive support for his labor. Even the law of Moses declares that the worker deserves a share of the harvest.

Yet Paul refuses to make use of that right. Rather than become an obstacle to the Good News, he chooses to endure hardship and preach freely. For him, sharing the message of Christ is not a matter of pride, but of obedience. God has entrusted him with a sacred calling, and he cannot remain silent.

Though free, Paul willingly makes himself a servant to all. To the Jews, he becomes like a Jew. To those under the law, he lives as one under the law. To the Gentiles, he meets them where they are. To the weak, he shares in their weakness. In every situation, he searches for common ground so that as many people as possible might be brought to Christ.

Finally, Paul compares the Christian life to a race. Just as athletes train with discipline and purpose to win a prize that will not last, believers are called to run for an eternal reward. Every step matters. Every sacrifice has meaning. Paul presses forward with determination, disciplining himself so that after preaching to others, he will not lose the very prize he proclaims.

Verse of the Day: Psalm 100: 4-5

Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation.

Question of the Day:

What song of thanksgiving is on your lips tonight?
