We’ve got to that bit in Paul’s letter to the Corinthians where he goes on and on and on about wisdom. As ancient Greeks, wisdom had huge currency to the Corinthians; some believed it could help you transcend all earthly form. And now they were trying to fit this gospel message into their wisdom box. Not unlike how early Jewish believers wanted to fit Jesus into their messiah box (which he clearly also didn’t fit!)... And Paul has his work cut out for him, trying to help them see that the cross, the tupsy-turvy nature of the gospel was what god always intended, and will never ever ever make sense to our cultural worldviews. We might not worship wisdom, and we might be able to accept the cross and how Jesus died, but we too have a worldview that changes and warps and distorts the gospel. One that is entirely inconsistent with grace, that demands that we strive in order to succeed. And just like the Corinthians we need to see that for what it is so that we can live in the fullness of grace again.
