How should Christians interact with the world outside of the church? The heart of Paul’s ethical teaching towards the church is this: be who you really are. Jesus has made us new creations. We are holy because of him and his work, not because of our own efforts. So, Paul argues, now behave like it. The problem in Corinth is a misunderstanding of their new nature. They don’t look and act like they now are. Instead, a church that looks like what it really is - like Jesus - necessarily offers something attractively and powerfully counter to the culture it finds itself in. But it is not separated off from that culture. It is fully immersed in and wonderfully distinct from it. Just like Jesus.
