1 Corinthians Part 8 | 1 Corinthians 8:1-13
As Christians, we are free from sin to live for Jesus. Within the Corinthian church some people understood this in a fuller sense than others, and their conscience allowed them to eat food that was previously designated for pagan idols. To those who felt this was compromising because such food was considered to be unclean, such eating would weigh heavy on their conscience. This was a live question at the time and Paul responds "YES!" It's a both/and consideration. "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God," says Paul (1 Cor 10:31). Paul's consideration of eating meat sacrificed to idols is specifically missional. He wants to ensure that the Christians of Corinth are not refraining from eating with and socializing with the non-Christians of the city because of what they eat. Rather, he intends that the glory of God should impel his people. This is what it means to live for Jesus and there's few better expressions of it than to be impelled forward by the love of Jesus to be with others who do not yet know him.
