Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking FOX.
It’s gotten cold all of a sudden, hasn’t it?
And that means my usual winter problem is back.
    It’s dry skin.
My skin dries out easily, so I have to take good care of it.
My solution is to never forget to apply moisturizer every day.
I always use Nivea cream because it spreads easily.
Still, there are two difficult problems.
The first one is my heels.
Even though I apply the cream to my heels, that alone isn’t enough in the coldest months, like January and February.
    My heels crack easily.
So what I do is to apply a thick layer of cream until my heels turn white, and right after that, put on heel socks and go to bed.
    It really works for me.
The second one is how to apply the cream to the back.
Since my body is so inflexible, it’s really hard to reach the middle of my back, especially the area just below my shoulder blades.
So I use a back applicator, a tool shaped like a back scratcher for spreading cream on your back.
How do you deal with dry skin? I’d love to hear your tips.
That’s it. See you next time!
    Thinking FOX

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking FOX.
A news article featured a study that examined the association between fathers’ involvement in childcare and their children’s mental health.
I haven’t read the original paper myself, but the conclusion of the study was like this:
if fathers get actively involved in childcare when their kids are six months old, those kids tend to have better mental health at 16.
I thought it was really interesting because common sense tells us that kids usually don’t remember anything from when they were six months old by the time they’re 16.
The memory of being cared for by their father seems to disappear, but if it actually stays deep down in their mind and keeps affecting their mental health, that would be really amazing.
Of course, there could be many other factors involved.
For example, families where fathers can be actively involved in childcare tend to be well-off enough that dads can take time away from work for childcare.
Another explanation could be that in families where fathers often share the housework, the relationship between the parents itself tends to be better.
That kind of environment may have a positive effect on the kids’ mental health later on.
As for me, looking back on when my son and daughter were babies, I’m not sure I was involved enough in taking care of them.
I hope what I did as a dad was enough to support their mental health.
That’s it. See you next time.
    Thinking FOX

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking FOX.
The Italian restaurant chain Saizeriya is finally raising its menu prices.
With prices rising at beef bowl and fast food chains, it was probably inevitable that Saizeriya would make this decision.
Looking online, it seems many customers are fine with this, since they know Saizeriya had no choice.
Personally, I feel the same way.
Speaking of Saizeriya, I haven't been there in years, but I have lots of good memories.
When I was a college student, I used to go there after tennis practice.
My go-to order was the Milan-style doria and the Diavola-style grilled chicken.
Those dishes were a great deal because you could fill up without spending much.
That was a real lifesaver for a college student living alone.
And when you wanted to treat yourself, the wine was pretty good too.
So even though prices are going up, Saizeriya's concept of good food at affordable prices still means a lot to many people.
    That’s it.
    See you next time.
    Thinking FOX

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking FOX.
Apparently, Ayase Ueda, a forward for the Japan national football team, has been injured.
According to a news report, the injury is a plantar fascia tear.
The plantar fascia, known in Japanese as “sokutei-kenmaku,” is a band of tissue on the bottom of the foot that connects the heel to the toes.
Speaking of the plantar fascia, I’ve also suffered from a related condition known as plantar fasciitis, which is called “sokutei-kenmaku-en” in Japanese.
Both affect the same area, but one is a tear and the other is inflammation.
Plantar fascia tears sometimes occur secondary to plantar fasciitis, but they can also occur on their own as a result of an acute injury.
When this area is injured, patients find it difficult to walk.
When I had plantar fasciitis, I used to walk on my toes to avoid putting weight on my heel.
It was tough, and I tried foot massage, custom insoles, and shockwave therapy.
But a tear is probably a more serious injury.
I wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the pitch soon.
That’s it. See you next time.

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking FOX.
Have you ever heard of something called “revenge bedtime procrastination”?
Procrastination refers to the habit of putting off things we need to do until later.
So revenge bedtime procrastination refers to staying up late to make up for the free time we lose to daytime work, which is known in Japanese as “ribenji yofukashi.”
I used to do this myself back when I was single.
Back then, after a long day at work, I often felt that something was still missing, and that it would be a waste to just go to bed.
So I wanted to stay up later and reclaim some time for myself.
On such nights, my go-to form of revenge was watching movies or YouTube videos with a drink in hand.
    Big mistake.
These days, this problem is getting even worse because of a new enemy. It’s social media.
Its power to eat into our lives is enormous.
    So, here’s my suggestion.
Instead of “ribenji yofukashi,” why not try “ribenji asakatsu”?
That means using your morning time as your revenge.
And then, you don’t necessarily have to do anything productive—just do whatever you want.
What makes it so good is that there’s a built-in time limit, so we can avoid getting sucked in.
So if you have a day when you’re exhausted from working late and feel like something is missing, why don’t you try going to bed early and reclaiming that lost time the next morning?
That’s it. See you next time.
    Thinking FOX

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking FOX.
I came across a news report about a new initiative launched by Borussia Dortmund, one of the most famous football clubs in the Bundesliga.
Apparently, the initiative aims to encourage supporters to focus more on the game.
This initiative involves a smartphone app.
When supporters switch the app to “Fan Mode,” it tracks how long their phones stay locked during the match.
The longer their phones stay locked, the more points they can earn.
The idea behind this initiative seems to be that the club doesn’t want supporters to get distracted by things like taking selfies, livestreaming, or posting on social media during the match.
Another reason may be that the mood in German football is turning against influencers filming matches for commercial purposes.
Personally, when I’m at the stadium, I don’t mind even if the person next to me is taking selfies, filming, or posting on social media, because I’m too absorbed in the game to notice.
I also think that, apart from commercial purposes, some people may use their phones because they want to capture the moment as a personal memory or look up details about the players during the match.
So I’m not sure how effective this app will be.
That said, I think it’s great that the club is trying new ways to improve the stadium atmosphere, so I hope this initiative pays off.
That’s it. See you next time.
    Thinking FOX

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking FOX.
On my way to and from work, I’ve recently noticed a terrible smell on the street.
Looking around, I saw a lot of ginkgo nuts that had fallen from the trees onto the sidewalk and been trampled by pedestrians.
In Japanese, we call them ginnan.
That was where the awful smell was coming from.
On top of the awful smell, I also have to be careful not to step on the rotten nuts while walking.
    It is really stressful.
Apparently, the smell is caused by compounds in the fleshy outer layer of ginkgo nuts, such as butyric acid and enanthic acid—known as *rakusan* and *enanto-san* in Japanese.
I’ve heard that butyric acid smells like sweaty feet, while enanthic acid smells like rancid oil.
So, no wonder it smells so bad with these two combined.
That said, when it comes to ginkgo nuts in dishes like chawanmushi, I really love them.
When they are cooked, **their distinctive flavor** is actually addictive.
However, eating too many of them can cause poisoning, so we need to be careful.
This is caused by a compound called ginkgotoxin, which blocks vitamin B6, a nutrient essential for normal nerve function.
Either way, I hope the ginkgo nuts on the street will be cleared away as the season goes on.
That's it. See you next time.
    Thinking FOX

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking FOX.
On October 20th, a space probe called MMX, designed to explore the Martian moons, was launched.
Thankfully, it lifted off successfully and started its journey to uncover the origin of the Martian moon Phobos.
I hope this mission brings back valuable data that will help advance science.
By the way, I’d been mistaken about MMX.
I had assumed that after arriving at Phobos, MMX would land on the surface right away and drive around like a car.
But as it turns out, MMX will mostly stay in orbit around Phobos and touch down on the surface for just a few hours to collect samples.
MMX plans to do this twice in total.
Before that, MMX will release a small robotic car called a rover and drop it onto the surface.
This rover will explore the surface for about 100 days to determine where MMX can safely touch down and collect the best samples.
MMX is expected to arrive at Phobos in 2027.
It will then return to the Earth and drop a capsule containing the samples in 2031.
So this journey will take five years. That’s a long time.
In the coming five years, how the world around us will change!
I hope the world won’t change so drastically in five years that the sample capsule literally becomes a time capsule.
That’s it. See you next time.

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking FOX.
Apparently, two koalas named Arnold and Bubbles have arrived at Saitama Children’s Zoo from Australia.
Reportedly, this is the first time in a decade that the zoo has welcomed new koalas from overseas.
While Arnold seems to have adjusted well to his new environment, Bubbles still appears a little nervous.
Because the number of koalas in Japan is still below its peak, bringing in new ones from overseas is important to help the population recover further.
By the way, I have two questions about koalas.
First, how do koalas maintain their muscle strength even though they sleep so many hours a day?
Koalas only eat eucalyptus leaves, which are hard to digest and provide very little energy.
To make up for this, koalas conserve energy by sleeping as much as 20 hours a day.
But I wonder if such long hours of sleep would cause their muscles to weaken.
The second question is why koalas can sleep while holding onto a tree.
Even though their claws are very sharp and well suited for gripping trees, they might accidentally slip off while sleeping.
But I have never heard of koalas falling out of trees while sleeping.
If anyone knows the answer to either question, please let me know in the comments.
That’s it. See you next time.

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking FOX.
Five days ago, I gave a speech about an aviation mystery.
Nearly 90 years ago, a female pilot suddenly vanished over the Pacific Ocean while attempting to fly around the world.
The US government searched for her plane, but couldn’t find any trace of it.
But recently, satellite images revealed an anomaly that appeared to be wreckage of her plane in the lagoon of Nikumaroro Island, near her planned flight path.
So a research team had just launched an expedition to the island to investigate the anomaly.
And yesterday, a news story popped up on my X feed, and I found out the answer.
As it turned out, it wasn’t the wreckage of her plane after all.
It was just a tree that had washed up on the sand in the lagoon.
    Oh my gosh.
I had fully expected the 90-year-old mystery to finally be solved.
But things don’t always go as expected.
Interestingly, now that I know the answer, the satellite image doesn’t look like plane wreckage at all; it looks like nothing but a tree.
We see what we want to see, and that can often be misleading.
Also, it’s easy to say that in hindsight.
Anyway, the 90-year-old mystery remains a mystery once again.
I hope that someday we’ll find the answer to this mystery.
That’s it. See you next time.
    Thinking FOX
