The Bristol Cable: The Future of Cities

1. Rethinking regeneration: Could co-design help transform Bristol’s housing estates?

Listen Later

Welcome to this audio long read by the Bristol Cable, the independent, investigative newspaper owned by thousands of people in Bristol. This is the first instalment of The Future of Cities, a year-long series looking at solutions to problems in Bristol and cities around the world, from housing to transport and energy.

In Bristol, it’s crunch time, as many of our post-war housing estates are in need of upgrading or rebuilding. A grassroots project in south Bristol is pioneering a way to involve current residents in designing new homes. So as Bristol City Council considers rebuilding and upgrading its social housing – can the city’s crop of radical co-design projects provide a model for delivering regeneration at scale?
