In this verse-by-verse Bible study, we continue our ongoing series through the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel with a look at 1 Samuel 10:1-16, titled “Road To Commission.”

Have you ever felt like the least likely person God could ever use? Before Robin Williams became a famous actor, his high school classmates voted him “least likely to succeed.” Yet a simple theater class changed his entire trajectory. In 1 Samuel 10, we see a similar, radical shift in the life of Saul. When Samuel pours oil over Saul, it is not just a change in job description; it is an internal transformation. God takes a quiet, hesitant man searching for lost donkeys and turns him into someone who worships and prophesies among the Lord’s people.

As we walk through this passage, we look at how God transforms us from the inside out. Through three specific confirming signs, God draws Saul step by step into active spiritual service. We see how the Lord thoughtfully provides for our daily physical and spiritual needs, just as He provided bread for Saul along his journey. We also explore what it means to step into your God-given calling right where you are, starting in your own hometown. Even when friends, family, or neighbors remember who you used to be and doubt what God is doing, the Holy Spirit empowers us to live boldly for Christ rather than seeking human approval.

This study reminds us that whether God calls us to full-time ministry or to serve Him in our daily work, every calling has a vital spiritual purpose. Our main priority is not striving for human prestige, but learning to walk with God, worship Him, and wait on His perfect timing. God delights in taking ordinary, unlikely people and filling them with His Spirit for His ultimate glory.
