In 1 Samuel 28, David is told by the Philistine king that he will be expected to help in an upcoming war with Israel. David is anointed and appointed to be the king of Israel and now is told he is expected to help wipe them out. Saul sees the vast Philistine army and panic sets in. God will not answer him or give any direction. God is silent. Saul has disobeyed and not humbled himself before God repeatedly. God is not a genie and faith is not magic. God is all powerful and all authoritative and we do things out of love for God, not out of what we'll get for it from God. In Saul's panic, he seeks out a medium to find Samuel who is dead and get instruction from him. Not only is consorting with the dead specifically forbidden by God, Saul himself has outlawed it. He is breaking both God's law and his own in this. Samuel tells Saul the very same thing he told him when we was alive - David will be king. He also adds, by the way, you are consorting in sin and you too are about to die. Sin = death. God can use anything and He steps in and uses this situation of evil for His purpose and glory. God can do that. He is God. We need to always seek our wisdom and direction from God and His Word, not the world. We need to be quick to repent if we fail and run from temptation with all our guts. God will pour out His forgiveness when we repent and He will show us His amazing forgiveness, grace, mercy, love, kindness, and goodness. He is an amazingly good Father.
