Paul writes to Timothy, his true son in the faith, urging him to remain in Ephesus and stop those who are spreading false teachings and meaningless discussions instead of advancing God’s work through faith. The purpose of instruction is love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith. Some have wandered away from these things, desiring to be teachers without truly understanding the law they speak about.
Paul explains that the law is good when used correctly. It was made for those who rebel against God and live in sin, exposing what is contrary to the wholesome teaching found in the glorious Good News entrusted to him by God.
Then Paul reflects on the mercy shown to him personally. Though he once blasphemed Christ, persecuted God’s people, and acted in unbelief, the Lord poured out his grace abundantly upon him. “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners,” Paul declares, “and I am the worst of them all.” Yet God showed him mercy so that Christ’s patience would serve as an example to everyone who would later believe in him and receive eternal life.
Paul urges Timothy to fight the good fight, holding firmly to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these things and suffered shipwreck in their faith.
He then calls believers to pray for all people—for kings and all in authority—so they can live peaceful and godly lives. God wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. There is one God and one mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus, who gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone.
Paul instructs men to pray with holy hands lifted to God, free from anger and controversy. He encourages women to honor God through modesty, self-control, good works, faith, love, holiness, and integrity.
Through these instructions, Paul calls the church to remain grounded in truth, devoted to prayer, and shaped by the mercy, grace, and salvation found in Christ Jesus.
Verse of the Day: Psalm 103:8
The LORD is compassionate and gracious, Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.
Question of the Day:
How does God's compassion change the way you face each day?
