🔥[10-07] How to make mentorship conversations more meaningful and strategic

Listen Later

Ezequiel Cortés (Lando): I would like the person I'm meeting on Friday to become my mentor regarding learning hacking and knowledge management as that is where I would like my career to pivot. I've worked with her in the past (I was actually her boss) and we have a good relationship, so that's a good start.

  • There are 5 different approaches in relationship building: Peer-to-Peer, Expert, Mentor, Advocate, Gatekeeper. When you connect to her as a mentor, you are the hero of the story.
  • Use the same formula in outreach for in-person meetings:
  • Lead with value by making others seen
  • Clearly tell your story of where you are, where you’re going, and what’s stopping you
  • Ask how she can specifically help you.
  • Set the stage of your story that supports your ask of how you can represent yourself with your various skills so you can attract the right opportunities.
  • Define what “success” looks like before the meeting:
  • Have clarity of where you’re going next and a clear idea of who and how you can connect to the right people.
  • Know the the things that you need to learn and how to present yourself on LinkedIn.
  • Get in touch more with genuine curiosity about her work and subtle offers to help.
