🔥[10-21] Understanding outreach approaches and getting deep into networking psychology

Listen Later

David McErlain: I would like to reach out to the new head of HR at Netflix who used to be the head of HR at Bunim Murray when I worked there. I haven’t talked to her in a long time but she should remember me.

  • Identify your outreach approach:
  • Peer to peer - sharing the same goal and problems
  • Expert - person who’s doing now what you want to do next
  • Mentor - ongoing relationship with expert
  • Advocate - person who can vouch for you
  • Gatekeeper - decision maker to get an opportunity
  • When taking the advocate approach, the hero of the story should be about the gatekeeper whom you can be valuable to. Research their needs where you can provide solutions.
  • Ensure that the introduction will be mutually beneficial to all 3 parties (you, your advocate and the gatekeeper).
  • Build a genuine relationship with your advocate that will eventually lead to them as your super connector.
  • Make them feel something from the message of your first paragraph (value) to get a response. Provide value that connects with their “why” and makes them seen.
  • Once you’re clear on your goal and obstacles, be specific and strategic on who you’re going to reach out to and why.
