David McErlain: I need help with researching for my outreach. I have personal details I’d like to include as well.
- When reaching out to an advocate, they’re not the hero nor the guide. It’s the gatekeeper that they’re going to connect you with, with you as their guide.
- Consolidate your value into one paragraph and have more “you”and less “I.”
- Convey in your story where you are now that is relevant and valuable to your advocate. Share not only the game that you play but the level of the game that you play and write it in 1-2 sentences only.
- Given the lukewarm connection, highlight relevant things that you’ve been up to since you last connected.
- Use your “ask” to gather information to get a better understanding of Netflix’s projects or current challenges where you might be valuable: “Given these are your goals (or obstacles), would this be worth chatting about further?”
- With the solid value and the right story, you’ll get a “Please keep in touch” as a worst case response.
- I’ll keep you in mind = I'm not going to keep you in mind.
- Please keep in touch = This could be a good fit but the timing is bad. Keep reaching out and maintain the relationship over time.
