Ellie and Rhiannon discuss Books That Matter, Brave Girls Book Club, Charli Evans from Literary Phoenix, and Big Data Girl to open your eyes to gaps and biases in literature!

That Bright Idea is a podcast all about innovation and this week we talk about innovation in terms of books! It is SHOCKING how different groups of people are excluded as characters and authors in books at present. So, here we highlight some bright ideas that are helping to combat this issue and broaden everyone's mindset.

"Do not underestimate the power of pen to paper!" Rhiannon Collins, 2021.

What is in store:

  • Strava chat: Why can't Rhiannon label her runs..?
  • Book subscription boxes: subscription boxes which all aim to highlight books by or about women and underrepresented groups. These subscriptions are creating a way to surface stories and authors that we may not see in the mainstream media or bookshelves.
  • Special Guest: Charli tells us about her journey towards realising that people with disabilities are largely excluded from children's books. She talks through how she took action to solving this problem and in turn the societal issue of ableism!
  • Note to Self: Big Data Girl is a picture book that explains big data and how it is used which is an amazing way to inform people of all ages.
