#10. Finding Calm in the Chaos of Family Life: 4 Steps to Remaining Peaceful as a Mom of Littles

Listen Later

Have you ever wondered, “How do I help my kids not lose it emotionally—and how do I keep from losing it when they do?”

That was my question for a long time.

I used to be caught in the cycle of reacting, feeling guilty, and hating how I showed up. I wanted so badly to parent differently than how I was raised, but I didn’t know how. I even hid in the bathroom during my kids’ tantrums just so I wouldn’t explode.

But that’s not my story anymore. God has walked me through such a healing journey—and now I have tools that help me hold my emotions safely, so I can hold my children’s emotions safely too.

In this episode, I’m sharing my 4-step process called The 4 S’s: Safe, Soothed, Seen, and Supported.

We’ll talk about how to move from chaos and overwhelm into calm connection—by understanding our emotions the way God designed them and learning how to co-regulate with our kids.

If you’re longing for calmer days and deeper connection with your kids, I think this episode will really encourage your heart. So grab your favorite warm drink, take a deep breath, and let’s dive in.

In this episode, I talk about:

  • My personal story of breaking free from emotional reactivity and guilt

  • How our beliefs about emotions often start in childhood

  • Seeing emotions not as “good” or “bad,” but as messengers God can use

  • What the Bible shows us about how God honors our emotions (Psalm 56)

  • The 4 S’s framework for emotional connection:

    1. Safe – calming your own body first so your child can borrow your calm

    2. Soothed – practical tools like prayer, deep breathing, movement, laughter, and hugs

    3. Seen – helping your child feel known, valued, and understood in their emotions

    4. Supported – gently guiding them toward growth after connection is restored

      Scriptures mentioned:

      • Psalm 56:8 – God keeps our tears in His bottle

      • Genesis 16 – “The God who sees me”

      • Psalm 23 – How the Lord, our Shepherd, models the 4 S’s for us

        Reflect and pray:

        • Which of the 4 S’s do I naturally offer my child? Which one do I need to grow in?

        • How did my parents handle emotions when I was growing up, and how has that shaped me?

        • What skills are my children needing my support to learn right now, and how can I lovingly guide them?
