Chapters 4–7 Summary:

Rose is shocked when her estranged mother, Janine Hathaway—a famous guardian—visits the Academy. Their strained relationship flares as Rose challenges her mother’s choices in class, leading to a public confrontation. Later, during a tense training session, unresolved emotions explode into a physical fight where Janine lands a punch that sends Rose to the infirmary with a black eye, deepening Rose’s feelings of abandonment and inadequacy.

Meanwhile, Rose spends time with Lissa, Christian, and his aunt, Tasha Ozera, at an old guardian watch-post. Tasha’s resilience and independence impress Rose, especially her choice to fight Strigoi without a guardian. The group bonds over laughter and stories, offering a rare moment of warmth.
