There is something that is often lost when we discuss what Judas did.
Yes, betrayal was part of it, but Judas’ main sin wasn’t betrayal. All the disciples left Jesus alone to die. If Jesus didn’t freely forgive betrayal then none of them and none of us would have a chance.
Yes, Judas did steal. But Jesus also freely forgave a thief on the cross.
In John, Jesus explicitly cites Judas’ sin that needed repented of… so what was it?
To answer that, this episode digs deeper into the Greek word “pternan” (πτέρναν meaning ‘heel’) in John 13:18.
“I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’” (John 13:18-ESV)
John 13:18 – ‘Ὁ τρώγων μου τὸν ἄρτον ἐπῆρεν ἐπ’ ἐμὲ τὴν πτέρναν αὐτοῦ.’
