In this ArTEEtude podcast episode Detlef Schlich talks with the great-grandson of Tommy O’ Connell, musician and West Cork Artists member Matt Diener. They talk about Skibbereen and his growing up in Ohio and more. At the end of every episode, we listen to a song of his Band THE BIG SIP, from the last Album THE BIG SIP Matt Diener is the lead singer and guitar player of The Big Sip. Formed at Middlebury College, the Big Sip joined the college and jam-band circuit in 2016. A year later they released their debut EP, Music for Clapping, followed in 2018 by a second self-released EP, Sip Responsibly. With their understanding of the subtle connections between jazz, soul, and electronic music, The Big Sip creates a unique sound that encourages not only tender introspection but also the proud celebration of community. Through it all, Diener's soulful, mellifluous vocals are central, though they yield to the album's many instrumental explorations — reflecting the Big Sip's proclivity for extended improvisation at live shows.

Tommy O’Connell, who grew up in what is now O’Sullivan’s shop in Skibbereen, Main Street, died in 1935.

ArTEEtude is West Cork´s first art, fashion and design podcast created and produced by Detlef Schlich. Schlich operates with his podcast cross-sectorally. For him, a visual artist has to think transversely instead of just enjoying the luxury of being the antagonist. To drive the narrative and to be a protagonist, he will dive and discover with us into the unknown and exciting deep ocean of the creative mind.

Detlef Schlich is Podcaster, Visual Artist, Film Maker and Ritual Designer, living and loving in West Cork and best known for his Essay about the Cause and Effect of Shamanism, Art and Digital Culture and the video installation Transodin´s Tragedy. He is mainly working in the field of performance, photography, painting, sound, installations, and film. To research our human condition and create artwork from this reflection he is using often the methodology of the digital shaman as alter ego.
