Don’t you hate getting caught doing something that you are not supposed to be doing? You know those times when you sneak to get that last piece of apple pie from the fridge late at night and then your wife walks in? Or if your kids pull out their favorite toy when they are supposed to be reading or going to bed? Think about that sinking feeling in the pit of the stomach when mom catches you in the act of doing anything BUT what you are supposed to be doing. Whether we like it or not, we all must please the boss or the mom or the dad. There seems to be something healthy about being held accountable. When someone who loves us expects the best of us, we strive to please that person. We cringe when we let that person down. Jesus’ closes this section of his Olivet Discourse with an illustration, a parable, of two types of servants in the kingdom of heaven. This parable compares the blessed or wise servant against the wicked or foolish servant. It is the sensible slave who is found working when the master of the house walks in. It is the foolish and wicked slave who is found slacking when the master of the house walks in. Let’s dig into Matthew 24:42–51 together.
